Project Overview

In 2022 Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium will play host to the Commonwealth Games. In preparation the stadium has undergone large scale development, which Birmingham Fabrications are proud to have been part of; successfully designing, supplying and installing new stainless steel balustrades forming vital ramp access at the venue.

Following a variety of successfully completed orders for a contractor based at the Stadium, we were tasked with developing a steel railing design for a new winding path. We were able to offer a solution to meet both legal and practical requirements, fabricating and installing over 200m of stainless steel balustrade.

After a site survey, we agreed upon a curved stainless steel balustrade to follow the radius and gradient of the winding path, which was under construction at the time – our proposed stainless steel balustrade consisted of: 60mm tube posts with welded 10mm round base plates, continuous 48mm hand rail and scalloped middle rails.

Once our design and material calculations had been approved, our team of Birmingham based fabricators began work on over 610 meters of stainless steel tube – this included fabricating over 185 stainless steel posts, bending the 48mm stainless steel tube, cutting and scalloping the middle rails.

After the stainless steel components had been produced, our CSCS certified operatives started the installation process. First step was to drill, level and resin fix the posts into position and then fully TIG weld the mid-rails and top rail into position onsite.

To  create the perfect finish, all welded joints were ground down and polished to ensure seamless joints.
